As gloomy, winter shades give way to sunny, vibrant hues, our interiors may also be in need of a refresh and there's no better way for your space to blossom than by celebrating the trends of the season.

Go beyond silver and gold (and avoid the slight brass overkill of 2016) by incorporating a fashionable copper accent to your space. Interest in copper on Pinterest is up 90 percent, and its uses are versatile: Add a touch of glamour to a table-scape with a copper vase, make a statement with a copper light fixture or try out copper flatware.

The growing interest in acrylic furniture, fittings and fixtures is perfectly, er, clear: Searches for acrylic decor have increased by 50 percent on Pinterest, and the material is quickly appearing on everything from modern tables to chic floating frames. If you're working with a small space, see-through acrylic furniture can also be a strategic choice to help open up the room.

With stress levels rising in many countries across the globe, the Danes have established themselves as lovers of calm and in turn, consistently top the polls as the happiest people on earth along with many other Scandinavian countries. It may have earned its critics along the way, but the world just can't get enough of Hygge, the Danish concept of living simply. Interest in it has increased by 285 percent on Pinterest. Largely defined as more of a feeling or mood than a specific word, the concept can be interpreted as a mental state rather than a physical one. Hygge is the art form of creating intimacy in any given moment

To follow the "decorate cosy, live simply" mantra yourself, outfit your home with flickering scented and unscented candles (the Danes are the biggest consumers of candles in the world, after all), cover your sofas with throws and blankets galore, scatter tactile cushions and display a few of your favourite books on the coffee table. Low level lighting, soft, textured fabrics and nature-inspired artwork all work well. Danish brand Skandinavisk have even developed a Hygge fragrance with notes of brewed tea, baked strawberry cake, rose petals and wild mint for the ultimate hygge experience.

INDIGO - The New Black

"There seems to be an ongoing demand for darker interior which makes me believe that deep muted hues will be even more popular in 2017. Teal, dusty pink, deep blue and burnt orange are some of the shades that will be seen even more around. Combined with rich plush textiles like velvet and matched with sleek woods and warm metals they create a sophisticated luxurious ambience that rocks the senses."

Eleni Psyllaki – My Paradissi

"My two big tips for 2017 trends in interiors are ‘blue’ and ‘velvet’. There will be so much blue about in ceramics and other homeware items. Blue velvet sofas and armchairs will also be everywhere! Brass with triumph over copper, marble will still be a thing, and pineapples and flamingos will be replaced by parrots and a more grown up safari look."

There’s also a tropical-meets-Africana theme at large, from Zoology cushions at Jonathan Adler (from £275), which feature gorillas and ostrich, to the totally fabulous Ardmore Collection by British wallpaper company Cole & Son (wallpapers start at £75 per roll), a collaboration with Ardmore Ceramics which takes these super-collectable and exuberant ceramics from KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and mixes with African wildlife with Zulu beadwork and woven basketware for its inspiration.
